Transitioning to Sustainable Fishing Practices / Solar Fishing Lanterns

PRODUCTS & SERVICES

What is WePower?

The urgency to embrace renewable fishing energy solutions and environmentally friendly practices has never been more pronounced than now. This shift is not only essential to mitigate the effects of climate change but also to safeguard the delicate ecosystem of Lake Victoria. We are transitioning Lake Victoria's fishermen towards cleaner and affordable fishing practices. Our approach involves taking deliberate steps, starting with introducing solar-charged fishing lanterns and eco-friendly floaters. By renting our lanterns to our clients, we take care of the charging and maintenance of our products to ensure quality and an environmentally sound reuse and recycling process.

Transitioning to Sustainable Fishing Practices

WeTu Hunter and NIWA Lago 600 Solar Fishing Lanterns

In the past and up to know, fishermen resorted to lead acid battery or kerosene-powered lanterns when night fishing for Omena fish, which result in fuel spillage, reduce the oxygen levels of the lake, polluting the waters with heavy metals and affecting the survival rates of aquatic life. Our rechargeable solar WeTu Hunter and NIWA Lago 600 fishing lantern models are powered by lithium-ion batteries, offering a cleaner and environmentally responsible alternative. This transition not only addresses the issue of pollution in Lake Victoria but also introduces cost-effective, dependable, and sustainable fishing energy solutions, which are essential in our collective efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Eco-Fishing Floaters

Our eco floaters, which are equipped with a buoyancy feature, have replaced traditional wooden floaters. This transition contributes to environmental conservation and prevents the deforestation of the papyrus reeds, a native tropical wetland sedge that thrives in the wetlands of Lake Victoria and has high ecological and cultural value to local communities as an important habitat and breeding ground for aquatic life. Unfortunately, this invaluable cultural heritage is threatened with extinction due to deforestation for the traditional floaters. The WeTu eco-floaters offer a durable alternative to traditional floaters and therefore also an economic advantage for fishermen.
