What is WeWater?
The accessibility of safe drinking water is a major challenge in Kenya. The situation is even worse in rural areas as people have to walk long distances to access water from unsafe water sources. Global warming, water pollution, population growth, urbanization, and poor management of water resources have exacerbated the issue of the water crisis. With our WeWater activities, we sell safe, clean, filtered drinking water that is not chemically treated. This water can be purchased any day of the year and at any time of day through a water ATM system that fully operates cashless with M-PESA payment. We apply simple yet innovative and quality-oriented filtration technologies to provide safe drinking water.
Our Methods
State of the art Water Treatment Technology
Our filtration system incorporates four key components, which are determined by the physiochemical characteristics of our water source: Pre-filtration to remove all sediments and large particles; Ultra-filtration or reverse osmosis to remove all physical and organic elements; Active carbon to remove further organic components and to provide the desired color, taste and odor; and finally UV disinfection. This is a crucial and unique last step in our process to provide the safest, cleanest drinking water possible.
Water Quality & Monitoring
Our water technicians constantly carry out preventive maintenance work on the treatment plant to reduce downtimes and ensure a high standard of hygiene in all parts of the plant. Furthermore, our hub operators conduct physical inspections of the water on a daily basis. To ensure a high quality of drinking water according to Kenyan and WHO standard, we conduct quarterly physiochemical and bacteriological tests using an external government certified laboratory.
WeWater ATM's
Our water is readily available through water ATMs 24/7, utilizing state-of-the-art technology. Clients can conveniently pay for the water using Mpay, a cashless payment system, and retrieve the credit with a simple press of a token at the ATM.
Project Sustainability
We understand that access to safe water is fundamental to a good quality of life and makes a major impact on the short and long-term health of families and children. We ensure a sustainable, accessible and efficient supply of safe drinking water in rural and peri-urban areas. The source of our water before filtration is mainly lake water combined with rainwater meaning no water shortages are expected, and communities always receive a consistent and reliable source of drinking water. With this raw water source, we are protecting natural resources from advancing climate change and building our own resilience.
